Howdy folks! Hows your week been?
I am on the improve and feeling like playing again. :-)
Last week I happen to be perusing a home decor magazine and came across an image of a beautiful table setting. It had been taken in the evening with sensational dinner wear, flowers and pretty little tea lights providing a soft romantic lighting to the scene.
Now I had been making up some new sparkly craft paper for my Sesenarts and Crafts store and thought "how pretty would this paper look around some tea light holders"? I was imagining not just the light produced by the candle within the holder, but the light reflecting off the cover by the other tea lights.
So here we go. How to make my tea light covers.
Now of course you can use any transluscent paper ( I must have a go with some of my silk paper.)
Ingredients (this will make 2 tea light covers at 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" dia )
1 sheet of sparkly paper (Ive used my new shimmer glow paper which is has copper and pale gold sparkles) 9 x 12"
1 sheet of vellum - 9 x 12". (Mine is a soft vellum brought cheaply at a 2 buck shop- a stiffer vellum would probably hold its shape better without a glass jar insert, though the jar makes the whole thing safer and holds the vellum in place nicely.)
1 decorative paper towel - one which is layered as you are going to separate the layers to use only the decorated surface sheet.
fine embellishments as required - I have used craft skeleton leaves for scrapbooking, but you could use fine threads, pressed flowers, stickers, words printed on tissue.....
pegs - to hold glued edges in place
spray adhesive
newspaper to protect surfaces
craft glue (not stick glue). I have used modge podge
glass to hold candle - Ive used 2 taco sauce jars.
Putting it together
1. After cutting the vellum sheet in half lengthwise, I have done the same with the sparkly paper and decorative paper towel. The decorative sheets should over hang the vellum a little) the extra will be cut away after glueing)
2. Take your newspaper, papers and embellishments outside to spray the adhesive.
3. Lay the newspaper on a flat surface, place the vellum sheet down and spray lightly with the adhesive. For one candle I have then placed the leaves on, sprayed another light coating then placed a layer of sparkly paper on top. For the other candle I have sprayed the vellum, laid the tissue on, sprayed again then a layer of sparkly was placed on top.
After spraying the glue and placing a layer of goodies on the vellum, I have gently pressed it flat using a sheet of baking/parchment paper on top. This stops the papers sticking to my fingers and helps to flatten the surface. Remember to peel the vellum off the newspaper frequently and change to a clean sheet of paper each time as it WILL stick together quickly! Don't worry if the tissue crinkles a little when pressing as the sparkly paper will hide it.
Lay out flat to dry after which I have trimmed the sparkly paper and tissue to match the vellum.
I let the layered paper dry then using my jar to size the cover, wrapped the paper around, marked it then placed a layer of craft glue down the inside edge (vellum side) of the paper. It was then removed from the glass and the edges held in place with pegs.
When dry just slip them over a jar with a candle inserted and decorate to your hearts content!
You could machine embroider the paper before gluing. This would add yet another lovely textured finish. Or maybe glue some bibs and bobs around the top and bottom edges?
Have fun and I will see you next time.
